LAWRENCEVILLE - Gwinnett County police are searching for a suspect who exchanged gunfire with an officer Wednesday after robbing a fast-food restaurant in Norcross.
No one was injured in the altercation.
The suspect robbed Church's Chicken at 6111 S. Norcross Tucker Road at 9:55 p.m. Wednesday and fled on foot. Police were searching the vicinity when an officer spotted the thief less than a mile away from the restaurant and tried to chase him.
The suspect pointed a semi-automatic handgun at the officer and fired, prompting the officer to shoot back, said Cpl. Darren Moloney, spokesman for the Gwinnett County Police Department. Neither the suspect nor the officer were injured, and the suspect managed to get away. Police were unable to locate the suspect despite a massive search involving tracking dogs and helicopters.
He is described only as a black man in his mid- to late 20s dressed in all black clothing. He was last seen running south toward DeKalb County.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Gwinnett County Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division at 770-513-5300.
