Lawrenceville approves funds for Aurora's temporary home

LAWRENCEVILLE - Lawrenceville has taken a major step in the renovation of City Hall to house the Aurora Theatre temporarily.

At the Lawrenceville City Council meeting Monday, the panel approved the spending of $93,650 to use as part of the build-out of the fourth floor of the municipal building on at 75 Clayton St. at the corner of Nash Street.

The theater that operated in Duluth for 15 years will use Lawrenceville's municipal building until an old Methodist church near the town's square is restored.

The Aurora drama group decided last year to put down stakes in Lawrenceville after learning the historic church would be available. In Duluth, the group held its plays in the vacant Parson's hardware store in the middle of downtown.

Monday night's action included the council's approving the $93,650 proposal from Johnson Controls Inc., for the heating and air conditioning design, "fire alarm layout and fire protection layout, controls work and startup work on existing air handling unit," according to the meeting agenda.

Also at the meeting, the council approved several streets for which to apply for resurfacing under the state's local assistance road program.

The list includes Oaks Drive, Blazing Ridge East, Stanley Court, Bedford Bay Trail, Maddox Street and Professional Drive.

Jim Steadman, director of utilities, told the council he does not expect the state agency to approve paving the entire list but that is not out of the question. Usually, the LARP agrees to improve "about three out of four," he said.

"I have driven these streets, and they are in need of repair," he said.

Voter frustration means trouble for those in office

The usual political torpor of August was shattered this week by the news that three congressional incumbents had lost their races in a single day. There were special forces at work in the contests that saw the defeats of two Democrats, Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman and Georgia Rep. Cynthia McKinney, and Michigan Republican Rep. Joe Schwarz. But taken together, they are the strongest signal yet of voter dissatisfaction with the status quo in Washington.
