Johnson, Shida place second at tourney

A pair of locals had runner-up finishes at this past week's Southeastern Junior Golf Tour Championship at FarmLinks Golf Club in Sylacauga, Ala.

Abby Johnson of Braselton placed second in the girls 12- to 14-year-old division with a total of 246 over three days. Johnson shot 85, 81 and 80.

Duluth's Billy Shida, the Region 7-AAAAA champion this year at Peachtree Ridge, was second in boys 16- to 18-year-old play with a total of 211, one behind winner Joe Young of Cochran. Shida opened with a phenomenal 65 before shooting 74 and 72 in the final two rounds.

Lawrenceville's Patrick Lovely, a former teammate of Shida's at Peachtree Ridge, tied for sixth in the SJGT's premiere event. He shot 73, 69 and 73.

Gwinnett golfers fare well in AJGA tourney

Three local golfers finished in the top 20 at last week's Burgett H. Mooney Jr. Rome Classic, an American Junior Golf Association event at Coosa Country Club.

Lion An of Duluth was fifth in the boys division with rounds of 70, 72 and 64. In the girls division, Emilie Burger of Hoschton (76-72-79) tied for 14th and Louisa Yang of Suwanee (79-76-74) tied for 17th.

Dacula's Dejiacomo signs with Piedmont golf

Tatiana Dejiacomo, a 2006 graduate of Dacula, has signed a golf scholarship with Piedmont College in Demorest. She is the daughter of Chris and Angela Dejiacomo.

Dejiacomo was the No. 1 golfer for the Falcons the past two seasons. She has only played competitive golf since 2005, but routinely shoots in the 80s.

Locals play in U.S. Kids Golf World Championship

Top-20 finishers Lexus Thalongsengchanh of Lilburn and Jenna McConnico of Duluth were the top locals at this past week's U.S. Kids Golf World Championship in Pinehurst, N.C.

Thalongsengchanh shot nine-hole rounds of 43, 38 and 44 to place 17th nationally in the girls 9-year-old division. McConnico was 19th in 12-year-old girls play with 18-hole scores of 81, 80 and 79.

Other local placers were: Suwanee's Kayley Marschke (43rd in 8-and-under girls), Suwanee's Sloan Shanahan (31st in 11-year-old girls), Loganville's Drew Galloway (58th in 6-and-under boys) and Suwanee's Garrett Marschke (80th in 11-year-old boys).

Aces in the crowd

Rachel Wahl made a hole-in-one on July 28 at the par-3, 17th hole at Northwood Country Club. She used an 8-iron for the ace.
