Prep roundup: Broncos reach region finals

STONE MOUNTAIN - Both the Brookwood boys and girls tennis teams advanced to the finals of the Region 8-AAAAA tournament on Monday afternoon.

The Broncos defeated Shiloh 3-0 and Parkview 3-1 in girls action, setting up a matchup today with Grayson for the region girls title. Grayson earned a spot in the finals by beating Meadowcreek 3-0 and Central Gwinnett 3-0.

On the boys side, Brookwood defeated Central 3-0 and Grayson 3-0 to reach the championship match. Its opponent in today's final is Parkview, a 3-0 winner over Berkmar and South Gwinnett on Monday.

Today's third-place matches features Parkview vs. Central in girls and South vs. Grayson in boys.

The Grayson girls got victories from Lindsay Murano, Sonia Anand and Sarah Beth Britt on Monday in their two wins. Brittany Lewis and Whitley Lewis were victorious in doubles along with the team of Tiffany South and Catherine Williams.

The Parkview boys got a pair of singles wins on Monday from Ryan Baker and swept the doubles points in both of their matches. Victorious doubles players included Ryan Lipson, Joseph Najjar, Kyle Staton, Ryan Smith, William Dove and Jason Bennett.


Buford 5, East Hall 0

BUFORD - Buford blanked East Hall 5-0 on Monday in a Region 8-AA play-in match.

Ben Hunter, Fletcher Cline and Chris Harford won in singles for the Wolves, who continue region tournament play today. Ryan Martin and Ben Davis won in doubles, as did Nick Harford and Preston Benson.


Buford 5, East Hall 0

BUFORD - Jordan Poole, Beth Curtin and Bekah Beaty won in singles on Monday as Buford rolled 5-0 over East Hall in a Region 8-AA tournament play-in match.

The Wolves, who resume tournament play today, also got doubles wins from Shelby Dasher and Whitney Holman at No. 1 and Molly Davis and Morgan Gottfried at No. 2.


South boys defeat Shiloh

SNELLVILLE - Tyler Cashbaugh shot 34 to lead South Gwinnett past Shiloh 159-181 on Monday at the Country Club of Gwinnett. The Comets also got a 39 from Stephen Hamilton and a 40 from Jeremy Britt.

Shiloh was led by Brian Ely's 43.


Parkview 5, Central 0

LAWRENCEVILLE - Stephen McCray pitched a complete-game, one-hitter to lead the Parkview Panthers to a 5-0 win over Central Gwinnett on Monday.

McCray, who also added two RBIs at the plate, struck out nine and walked three to pick up his third win of the year.

Craig Brisson and K.D. Kang were both 2-for-3, Michael Langley was 1-for-4 with an RBI and Steve Esmonde and Scott Steele were both 1-for-2 with an RBI for the Panthers, who are now 13-5 overall and 5-1 in Region 8-AAAAA.

Brookwood 10, Meadowcreek 0

NORCROSS - Jordan Erisman got the win, pitching three innings of shutout ball as the Brookwood Broncos defeated Meadowcreek 10-0 in six innings on Monday.

Tim Lored was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI and Jeff Button was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs for the Broncos, who are now 12-6 overall and 5-1 in Region 8-AAAAA.

Berkmar 8, Shiloh 6

SNELLVILLE - Kellen Gross was 4-for-4 with four singles and four RBIs, including the game-winner, to lead the Berkmar Patriots to an 8-6 win over host Shiloh on Monday.

Nick Crabtree was 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Patriots, who improved to 5-13 overall and 2-4 in Region 8-AAAAA with the win. Brad Brown was the winning pitcher and Jacob Matheny picked up the save for Berkmar, who pounded out 11 hits as a team.

Collins Hill 6, Dacula 2

DACULA - Justice French pitched a complete-game two-hitter to lead the Collins Hill Eagles to a 6-2 win over Dacula on Monday. French, a junior, struck out three and walked two in the win.

Nick Sperounis was 2-for-3 with a run, Kevin Morrison was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBIs, Daniel Warzon was 2-for-4 with a double and Justin Earls added a solo home run for the Eagles, who are now 14-5 overall and 3-0 in Region 7-AAAAA.

North Gwinnett 15, South Forsyth 7

CUMMING - Every hitter in the lineup had at least one hit and six had at least two as the North Gwinnett Bulldogs pounded host South Forsyth 15-7 on Monday.

Mitch Rider had a grand slam and five RBIs, Ty Goodbar and Jim Moreland added solo shots and Brock Anderson, Logan Sharrett and Justin Rahm each had two hits as well for the Bulldogs, who improved to 15-4 overall and 1-2 in Region 7-AAAAA. Travis Echols added a three-run double in an eight-run first for North.

Mike Peters picked up the win for the Bulldogs.

Chattahoochee 8, Norcross 5

NORCROSS - The Norcross Blue Devils scored five runs in the fifth inning, but it wasn't enough as they fell to Chattahoochee 8-5 on Monday.

Steven Hunt picked up the loss for the Blue Devils, who are now 13-6 overall and 2-1 in Region 7-AAAAA.

Darius Hanks was 3-for-4 for Norcross.

Wesleyan 8, Providence 3, 8 innings

NORCROSS - Wesleyan blew open a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning with six runs to defeat Providence 8-3 on Monday.

Kevin Ruiz got the win on the mound for the Wolves and was also the hitting star as well, going 3-for-5 with a home run. Sophomore Grayson Garvin was 3-for-4 with a two-run homer in the eighth and Kyle Edwards added pinch-hit home run in the inning as well.

Wesleyan is now 15-5 overall and 9-3 in Region 8-AA.

Providence, which scored two runs in the seventh to send the game into extra innings, was led by Andy Vess, who was 2-for-2 with a home run. Ryan Woods, Tyler Johnson and Michael Webb each added two hits for the Stars. Jesse Meier started on the mound for Providence (12-7, 8-4) and allowed just four hits and one run while striking out seven.

Buford 15, Union County 0

BUFORD - The Buford Wolves remained perfect in Region 8-AA on Monday with a 15-0 win over Union County in four innings.

Brandon McEachern pitched all four innings to pick up the win for the Wolves, who are now 16-2 overall and 12-0 in the region. John Macolino was 3-for-3 with an RBI, Cory Allen was 1-for-2 with four RBIs, Jay Tee Swanson was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Maverick Dodd added a home run.

GAC 15, Rabun County 5

NORCROSS - The Greater Atlanta Christian baseball team improved to 12-6 overall and 8-4 in Region 8-AA with a 15-5 win over Rabun County in five innings on Monday.

Landon Bennett was 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs, Patrick Savage was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs and Brock Bennett was 3-for-3 with a double, a triple and two RBIs for the Spartans.


Meadowcreek 1, Mundy's Mill 0

JONESBORO - Jesus Gutierez scored the game's lone goal as the Meadowcreek boys defeated host Mundy's Mill 1-0 on Monday.


Meadowcreek 2, Mundy's Mill 0

JONESBORO - Stephanie Cordova and Krystel Hurlbert each scored goals as the Meadowcreek girls defeated Mundy's Mill 2-0 on Monday.

With the victory, Meadowcreek improves to 4-11-1.


Greater Gwinnett 6, Harbester 3

LAWRENCEVILLE - Rebecca Butler picked up the win on the mound and also added two hits as the Greater Gwinnett Christian softball team defeated Harbester 6-3 on Monday.

Abby Law picked up the save and Sara Veamoi added a triple and a single for the Barons, who are now 7-2 on the season.
