Woman scammed out of $4,000
•NORCROSS - Someone claiming to be a representative of a prize company convinced a Norcross woman to wire him $4,000 so she could receive a supposed cash prize.
The woman was told she had won $250,000 from Prize America when an unidentified man posing as a U.S. Customs agent called her on April 5. The caller said she needed to pay a luxury tax of $8,500 to claim the prize. The woman sent two payments totaling $4,000 through Western Union to an address in Canada.
She was about to send an additional $4,000 payment when the transfer was stopped by Western Union. The suspect called again several times after that requesting the final payment, but the victim became suspicious when he provided only a limited amount of information.
•LAWRENCEVILLE - Four burglaries occurred last week in Holland Park Apartments off McKendree Church Road in Lawrenceville.
Residents told police the burglar came overnight, usually forcing entry through the sliding glass patio door. One victim was home when he heard a knock on his front door. He looked through a peep hole and didn't see anyone outside, according to a police report.
Several minutes later a man tried to enter the apartment through the sliding glass door, but the suspect ran upon seeing the resident. The suspect was described as a black man in his late teens, about 5 feet 10 inches tall and 180 pounds wearing black clothing and a black rag on his head.
Another victim told police it was the second time in two years that his apartment had been broken into. Items stolen in the burglaries included electronic equipment, jewelry and video games. The reported incidents occurred in buildings 12, 8, 15 and 6, the police report stated.
