Jolie the new face of St. John

NEW YORK - Actress and U.N. goodwill ambassador Angelina Jolie is the new face of luxury apparel label St. John.

Jolie also will be the voice behind the company's new charity created in support of children's issues and causes, it was announced Thursday.

St. John's new advertising campaign with the 30-year-old actress, set to launch in spring 2006 publications, will be shot by photographer Mario Testino.

Lavigne promotes album in Mexico

MEXICO CITY - Avril Lavigne loves her Spanish-speaking audiences, but she plans to stick to making music in English.

''I'll probably stick to English. I understand it a lot better,'' the 20-year-old singer, who was born in Canada, said before a recent performance at the Mexican capital's Palacio de los Deportes. ''It's the main language, a lot of people understand it.''

Lavigne was in Mexico to promote her ''Under My Skin'' album, the follow-up to ''Let Go.''

Tyson opens boxing tourney in Chechnya

GUDERMES, Russia - Mike Tyson opened a boxing tournament in Chechnya, becoming the first international celebrity to visit the war-ravaged Russian republic.

The former world heavyweight champion traveled to the eastern city of Gudermes Thursday as a guest of honor at the all-Russian tournament, held in memory of assassinated Chechen President Akhmad Kadyrov.

Singer charged with violating probation

FRANKLIN, Tenn. - Country music singer Mindy McCready was released from jail Wedn-esday on $50,000 bond on a charge of probation violation.

McCready had been jailed since Aug. 26, when she was arrested in Florida.

The incident stems from charges last year when she pleaded guilty to fraudulently obtaining the painkiller OxyContin at a pharmacy.
