Goaltender Adam Berkhoel, who played for the Gwinnett Gladiators last season, recorded his first NHL win on Saturday night for the Atlanta Thrashers.
The 4-3 win came 24 hours after Berkhoel and another former Gwinnett netminder, Michael Garnett, watched the Gladiators home opener. Berkhoel and Garnett, also backstopping the Thrashers this season after playing for Gwinnett in 2003-04, were honored for making their NHL debuts this season. Friday's pregame festivities included highlights of the duo on the large video screens and they were roundly cheered by the crowd.
Berkhoel is the third former Gwinnett goalie to play in the NHL, joining Garnett and Adam Munro. He is now 1-1-0 in the NHL.
The Gladiators current goalies, Tuomas Tarkki and Sean Fields, didn't allow a goal in regulation during the team's opening weekend.
Tarkki was impressive in Friday's opener at the Arena at Gwinnett Center, made 34 saves in his professional debut, but lost in a shootout. Tarkki, out of Northern Michigan University, was only beaten once in the shootout after 65 minutes of scoreless play.
Fields followed that up with his own shutout, this one a 6-0 road win against Pensacola on Saturday.
Up to the A
Rookie forward Jared Ross was called up to the American Hockey League by Gwinnett affiliate Chicago following Friday night's game. Ross, who attended training camp with the Wolves this year, played in Chicago's 2-1 loss to Iowa on Saturday.
Leading the charge
Forward Jeff Campbell leads the team in scoring through the first two games of the season, posting a goal and two assists for the Gladiators.
Pascal Pelletier leads the team in goals (2) in the Gladiators 6-0 win Saturday at Pensacola.
Campbell finished second in scoring on the Gladiators last year with 63 points and shared first in goals scored with 30 on the season.
From the A
Forward Guillaume Desbiens was assigned to the Gladiators from the Chicago Wolves of the AHL on Friday and appeared in both of the Gladiators games this weekend. The rookie did not register a point with the Gladiators, but finished last season with Rouyn-Noranda of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with 43 points in 56 games.
