Sean Fields made 38 saves to record a 6-0 shutout win over the Pensacola Ice Pilots on Saturday night to help the Gladiators improve to 1-0-1 on the season.
Brad Schell scored the first goal of the season for the Gladiators, punching a centering pass from Jeff Campbell on a 2-on-1 break past Pensacola netminder Frederic Cloutier for an early 1-0 lead. Schell's tally came 2:02 into the first period. Gwinnett capitalized on a penalty filled second period, posting a power play and shorthanded goal in the stanza. Campbell pushed the Gladiators' lead to 2-0 with a shorthanded breakaway tally, rolling the puck through the legs of Cloutier at 10:31 of the second period. Campbell knocked the puck down at the red line and posted the goal unassisted. Lane Manson scored his first goal of the season on a power play later in the second period, ripping a slapshot from the blue line past Cloutier. Pascal Pelletier and Matt York picked up the assists on the power play tally at 14:02 of the second period. Pelletier pushed the lead to 4-0 just 2:32 into the third period by beating Cloutier to the far post for the tally. Brad Schell and Troy Milam posted the assists on the goal. Gwinnett took a 5-0 lead on Pelletier's second goal of the night as he capitalized as the puck took a weird bounce off the board in the corner. The puck bounced right to a waiting Pelletier who ripped a shot past an out of position Cloutier. Chris Durno rounded out the scoring posting an unassisted goal at 15:26 of the third period to give Gwinnett a 6-0 lead. Durno threaded the puck though Cloutier's arm and body for the tally. Gwinnett finished with 52 shots while going 2-for-10 on the power play. The Ice Pilots went 0-for-10 on the man advantage in the shutout loss while posting 55 penalty minutes. - From staff reportsMore like this story
