Wesleyan softball secures state berth

DAHLONEGA - On the verge of elimination, Wesleyan scrounged out a 1-0 victory over Lumpkin County on Wednesday at the Region 8-AA softball tournament and qualified for state. The Wolves (18-9-1) lost to Dawson County 2-0 earlier in the day, but rallied to defeat the host Indians. Missy Genthert (12-5) pitched the shutout win for Wesleyan while Whitney Warren had the game-winning RBI. Paige Hamlin had a double in the victory and the Wolves get a rematch with Dawson County today for seeding in the state playoffs. SOFTBALL Commerce 8, Hebron 5 JEFFERSON - Hebron Christian lost 8-5 to Commerce in the Region 8-A tournament Wednesday at the Jackson County Recreational Park. Nichole Smith was 3-for-4 for the Lions (13-6). VOLLEYBALL Brookwood sweeps Salem SNELLVILLE - The Brookwood volleyball team improved to 25-8 on the season with a sweep of Salem on Wednesday. Led by Paige Ivey's 16 digs, nine kills and three aces, the Broncos won 25-23, 25-21, 25-15. Paige Slusser had seven digs and three blocks and Kalin DeMarrais added nine digs and five kills for Brookwood. Central beats Grayson, South LAWRENCEVILLE - Central Gwinnett didn't drop a game, cruising to wins over Grayson and South Gwinnett in makeup matches Wednesday. The Black Knights defeated Grayson 25-12, 25-11 and South 25-12, 25-13. Amber Kirkpatrick had 20 kills and four aces, while Karen Green had nine kills and three aces. Lauren Nesmith added seven aces and seven digs as Central improved to 33-10 overall and 6-1 in the area. Parkview wins twice LILBURN - Parkview beat Meadowcreek 25-9, 25-12 and Shiloh 25-18, 25-21 in makeup matches on Wednesday. Jessica Geiger led the Panthers (26-13, 6-1) with 18 kills and six digs.
