Cage welcomes newborn son

LOS ANGELES - Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage is a new father.

His wife, Alice Kim Cage, gave birth Monday to a boy, Kal-el Coppola Cage, in New York City, said Cage's Los Angeles-based publicist, Annett Wolf. No other details were available.

''They are healthy and happy and it's quite lovely,'' Wolf said by phone from New York.

Cage, 41, who won an Oscar for his role in ''Leaving Las Vegas,'' has a son from a previous relationship.

George Clooney to play journalist

NEW YORK - George Clooney is mad that ''liberal'' has become a dirty word.

''I'm going to keep saying 'liberal' as loud as I can and as often as I can,'' Clooney told Newsweek magazine in an interview about the film ''Good Night, and Good Luck,'' which he co-wrote and directed.

The black-and-white film about journalist Edward R. Murrow will be in theaters nationwide Oct. 14. Clooney plays the role of CBS producer Fred Friendly.

Bass quiet on 'N Sync plans

OXFORD, Miss - The Backstreet Boys are back, but don't expect 'N Sync to be recording anything new anytime soon.

Lance Bass told The Associated Press that their upcoming greatest hits compilation ''will have some new material on it.'' But the 26-year-old singer was tightlipped about whether 'N Sync would reunite for another album.

'N Sync's hits include ''I Want You Back,'' ''Bye Bye Bye'' and ''Gone.''

Their greatest hits album is expected to be released Oct. 25.

Hip, back pains keep Fonda from premiere

PARIS - Jane Fonda canceled plans to attend a premiere of a documentary about her former husband Roger Vadim in southern France because of hip and back problems.

Karine Lyons, a spokeswoman for the French Riviera resort of Saint-Tropez, where the screening was to be held Monday night, said flying to France had left Fonda, 67, with hip and back pain, which prompted her to seek treatment at a Paris hospital.
