Boy, 3, dies after being struck by car

NORCROSS - A car slammed into a mother and her two young sons who were trying to walk across Beaver Ruin Road on Sunday evening, killing a

3-year-old and injuring the other two.

Authorities said Mota Roberta, 24, was holding her 1-year-old son and grasping her 3-year-old son by the arm as they walked across the street at 8:57 p.m. Roberta and her children were walking back toward their home on East Hill Way when they attempted to cross Beaver Ruin Road.

They were not at a designated crosswalk, said Officer Darren Moloney, spokesman for the Gwinnett County Police Department.

As the mother and children reached the right eastbound lane of Beaver Ruin Road, a 2004 Volkswagen Passat slammed into them. The speed limit on that road is 45 mph, but investigators are still trying to determine how fast the car was traveling.

The 3-year-old, Aldahir Hernandez, died at the scene. Roberta was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center, where she was listed in fair condition Monday. The 1-year-old, Miguel Angel Jaimes, was in serious condition at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite.

The driver of the Passat, Yoonhae Lee, 36, and his adult female passenger were not injured. Moloney said Lee has cooperated fully with investigators and no charges were pending against him.

During a Norcross City Council session Monday night, officials discussed improvements to the stretch in light of Sunday's tragedy.

Councilmen asked the city staff to work with the state Department of Transportation to have street lights added to Beaver Ruin Road.
