Duluth girls get first victory since 2003

LOGANVILLE - It's always nice to get that first win of the season out of the way. But when you didn't win a game the season before, that first win is much more special.

For the Duluth girls, that win came Tuesday night when Torlanda Poindexter hit a last-second shot to beat Grayson 40-38 for the Wildcats' first victory since 2003.

That win made head coach Shane Roughton "almost speechless."

"I didn't want to jinx anything because I knew we had a lot of talent and I was afraid that it would take a while for it to gel," Roughton said. "This is huge, it was a storybook ending, there were a lot of tears in that locker room tonight."

Duluth (1-3) took a 25-14 lead at halftime but only scored four points in the third quarter, which allowed Grayson to come back and tie it. The game was still tied at 38 with 13 seconds to play as Duluth's Mykala Walker held for the last shot and then hit Poindexter for her only two points of the game.

Daphne Adebayo led the Wildcats with 12 points, while Walker finished with nine points. Laurie Thomas had eight points while Laura Moore had five points. Michelle O'Quinn led all scorers with 18 points for the Rams.
