LOGANVILLE - The county's champions of youth football were crowned this past Saturday at Grayson High School with all eight age groups of the Gwinnett Football League holding county finals.
The GFL, which serves as the feeder league for the county's high school programs, featured 224 football and cheerleading teams this season.
Brookwood and Mountain Park were the big winners with two age group championships each on Saturday. The Broncos' day included sweeping both of the eighth-grade divisions.
The following is a breakdown of Saturday's championship games:
6- and 7 year-old
Dacula North 27, Mountain Park South 6
Garrett Rigby of Mountain Park South got it all started with the first touchdown of the day on a 35-yard scamper with 7:13 left in the first quarter but it was all Dacula from there. Dylan Singleton matched it on the first play from scrimmage for the Dacula North Falcons with a 40-yard run with 6:35 left in the first period. Dijon Joseph had a 55-yard run and Singleton converted the run to make it 13-6 with 8:51 left in the second period. Shelley got it started with a 32-yard run and his PAT with 4:45 left in the first period provided a 7-0 lead. But the East team answered with 19 points, beginning with Troy Morrison's 4-yard TD run. XZavier Shugars' PAT knotted the score at 7-7. Morrison had his second 4-yard TD run with 1:01 left in the first half and the East took a 13-7 halftime lead. Morrison recorded his third touchdown with a 48-yard run with 6:44 left in the third and the East led 19-7. Then Shelley plunged in from a yard out and converted the PAT and the West cut the lead to 19-14 with 9:45 left in the game. After the West held, Shelley again cut right and scampered 60 yards with 5:39 left for the game-winner.
Mill Creek West 19, Dacula North 0
Miles Jack went over 1,000 yards for the season and he scored two touchdowns in a 19-0 shutout of Dacula. Jack scored with 7:47 left in the first period on a 20-yard run and also raced 61 yards for a TD with 7:17 left in the first half. Carter Governale then iced the game with a 39-yard TD run with 2:50 left in the opening half. Governale converted the PAT and Mill Creek led 19-0. The second half was a defensive battle but Mill Creek had enough points to hold on for the victory.
Mountain Park West 14, Mill Creek South 8
Mountain Park got a 15-yard TD run with 2:40 left in the game from Chris Carson to rally for a 14-8 victory over Mill Creek. Mill Creek cracked the scoring first on a fourth-and-goal play as the Hawks used a halfback pass from B.J. Harmon to Ted Colburn for a 12-yard TD. Hayden Washington provided the extra point and Mill Creek led 8-0 with 3:34 left in the first period. Mountain Park's defense stiffened the rest of the way. Carson scored on a 22-yard run with 8:22 left in the first half and quarterback Ali Groves cut the lead to 8-7 with the PAT. After a scoreless third period Carson was the hero in the fourth with his game-winning TD.
8th Grade, Division II
Brookwood 20, Grayson 6
Brookwood's Alan King scored two first-half TDs and the Broncos went on to a 20-6 victory over Grayson. King opened the scoring with 6:40 to go in the first period on a 3-yard plunge and he added a 1-yard TD run on the first play of the second period along with a two-point conversion for a 14-0 halftime lead. With 7:31 left, Keenan Harp scored on a 4-yard run and Brookwood led 20-0. Grayson avoided the shutout as Maurice Zereoue, the nephew of NFL running back Amos Zereoue, scooped up a fumble and raced 70 yards for a TD in the waning moments of the game.
Buford North 23, Brookwood South 6
Buford got two touchdowns from Kyle Kellam to build a 16-0 lead and cruise to a 23-6 win over Brookwood. After a scoreless first quarter, Kellam scored midway through the second and converted the two-point conversion to give Buford an 8-0 lead at halftime. Kellam scored on a 7-yard run in the third quarter and again converted the two-point conversion to give Buford a 16-0 lead. Nicholas Tompkins cut the lead to 16-6 with a 10-yard run for Brookwood but the extra point was no good. Ricky LeGrant put the finishing touches on the game with an 80-yard TD run and this time Keller converted the one-point PAT for a 23-6 victory.
Norcross South 12, Grayson East 0
Seth Hinsley took the opening kickoff back 60 yards for a touchdown and Norcross South blanked Grayson East 12-0 behind a strong defensive performance. Ronald Rose added a 5-yard TD run with 6:23 left in the game to seal the victory.
8th Grade Division I
Brookwood 21, Grayson 7
Brookwood got two second-half touchdowns to break a 7-7 tie and lock up a 21-7 victory over Grayson. What was billed as a battle of two stars, Julian Suber of Brookwood and Ian Pemberton of Grayson, turned into a great game. Suber caught a 10-yard TD pass midway through the first quarter and Travis Falcon made the extra point to give Brookwood a 7-0 lead. Pemberton had a 10-yard run of his own and the extra point was good to knot the score at 7-7. It remained that way until 8:23 was left in the game Levon Hooks caught a TD pass from 50 yards out. Falcon made the extra point and Brookwood led 14-7. Suber then sealed the win with a 57-yard TD with 1:09 left in the game and Falcon's extra point gave the Broncos a 21-7 win.
