Jimmie John Powell, age 88 of Grayson, Georgia, died November 12, 2005. He was preceded in death by his mother, Hattie Bell Greene Powell and father, David Richard Powell. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Helen Britt Powell; brothers, Toby Powell and Beauford Powell and sister, Idella Robertson. He is survived by daughter and son in law: Martha and Dolford Layson of Grayson, GA; son: John and Melanie Hancock of Orange Park, Florida; grandchildren: Elizabeth Wiggins of Grayson, Trey, Emily, Caroline and Katie Hancock, all of Orange Park, Florida; brother: Rufus Powell of Alapaha, GA; sister: Winnie Dorsey of Norman Park, GA; brother in law: Clark and Carol Britt of Loganville, GA; sisters in law: Laurie Britt of Snellville, GA and Martha and Harold Jones of Elberton, GA; and numberouse nieces and nephews. Mr. Powell graduated from Piedmont College with a BA and the University of Georgia with a Masters Degree. Prior to coming to Gwinnett County in 1948, Powell attended Norman Junior College in Norman Park, GA. Following his graduation, he embarked on a four and a half year stay in the Army, which found him in Patton's armor division. During World War II, he participated in four major campaigns - Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, the Rhineland conquest and the Central Europe campaign. His activity in battle won him a Purple Heart. In 1948, he came to Gwinnett County and became a physical education teacher and basketball coach at Snellville High School. When South Gwinnett High School opened in 1957, he went there as a football, basketball, baseball and track coach and athletic director. He also developed the tennis and golf programs at the school. In 1963, he was named Region Baseball Coach of the Year. In 1968, he became the school's assistant principal. When Centerville Elementary was built in 1973, Powell left South Gwinnett to assume the duties of Principal of this school. Gwinnett County Public Schools honored him by naming him Elementary School Principal of the Year in 1981. He retired in 1983. He was a member of the Snellville Lions Club, serving as president, was the 1992 Recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow award for recognition of his commitment to serving the community, and the 1995 Recipient of the President's Appreciation Award. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Grayson. Funeral services will be held at 3 pm, Monday, November 14, 2005 at Wages Snellville Chapel, with Dr. Buddy Parrish and Chris Wren officiating. Interment will follow in Snellville Historical Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the funeral home. Flowers accepted or donations to Jimmie J.
