The Greenville Grrrowl scored four times in the third period to get past the Gwinnett Gladiators 5-4 on Saturday night in Greenville.
Scott Kelman and Chris Durno hooked up on a 2-on-1 break to give the Gladiators a 1-0 lead 6:54 into the first period. Durno netted his fourth goal of the season off a feed from Kelman on the break. Jeff Campbell also picked up an assist on the tally.
Gwinnett took a 2-0 lead on Scott Mifsud's first professional goal at the 12:13 mark of the first period, ripping a slap shot past Greenville netminder Mike Brodeur. Ryan Fultz picked up an assist on the goal.
Cam Brown forced Brodeur to cheat to the middle of the crease and Mifsud caught the netminder flat-footed to pick up the goal.
Greenville got on the board with a power-play goal at the 13:47 mark as Jason Jozsa ripped a slapshot from the left wing point past Gladiator netminder Tuomas Tarkki for the goal. Colin Pepperall and Kenny Smith teamed up to pick up the assists on the tally for the Grrrowl.
Derek Nesbitt's first professional goal extended the Gladiators' lead to 3-1 on the power play 5:12 into the second period. Finding a loose puck in the slot, Nesbitt jammed it past Brodeur for the goal. Fultz and Kelman picked up the assists on the power-play goal.
Kelman's fourth goal of the season pushed the Gladiators lead to 4-1 midway through the second period as he tapped the puck off the right post coming out of the corner. Durno fed Mifsud, who pushed the puck into the corner to set up Kelman on the goal at 10:38 of the middle stanza.
Greenville battled back in the third period with four goals in the final period. Brock Radunske cut the Gladiators' lead in half at the 8:16 mark of the third period. Pepperall and Smith picked up the assists on the tally.
Tyler Mosienko cut the Gladiators' edge to 4-3 at the 14:19 mark of the third period jamming the puck past Tarkki. Mosienko posted the goal shorthanded on a delayed penalty as Matt York was called for a tripping penalty.
Les Haggett added the assist on the goal.
York had to serve the delayed tripping call giving Greenville another power play that Allan Sirois capitalized on at the 16:03 mark of third period beating Tarkki with a slap shot from about 30 feet out. Krys Barch and Jason Jozsa picked up the assists on the power play goal.
Greenville then picked up the game winner off the stick of John Snowden with just 41 seconds left in the third period on a slap shot from the left wing circle. Pepperall added an assist on the game winner.
Tarkki made 24 saves in the loss for the Gladiators, who fall to 3-1-1 on the season in the loss. Gwinnett went 2-for-11 on the power play while Greenville went 3-for-5 on the power play in the win.
