DACULA - Dacula's new Maple Creek Park on McMillan Road will open at sunrise on Saturday. The park comprises a total of 20 acres, and approximately two-thirds of the full acreage will open. Maple Creek Park is a passive park offering walking trails, parking, bathrooms, lights and a playground.
Dacula purchased the property two years ago for $330,000 and used $450,000 from 2001 SPLOST funds to develop it. City officials plan to begin designing a development strategy for the remaining acreage that lies to the rear of the developed public area in about one year. City officials will hold a formal dedication in the spring.
Alcovy Road residential project tabled
A proposed annexation and rezoning of 129 acres along Alcovy Road was tabled until the December council meeting. Blackhawk Ranch LLC plans to construct 299 single-family homes on the acreage bordering Freeman's Mill Park, at a density of 2.52 homes per acre, with almost half the acreage set aside as greenspace. Michael Comer, Gwinnett County deputy administrator, said the county's objection to the project was the property is shown as low-density residential in the Gwinnett 2020 Land-Use Plan and because the acreage contains portions of the future Alcovy River Greenway. Mayor Jimmy Wilbanks said Gwinnett has no easements within the acreage.
