WINDER - Three brothers have been arrested in connection with a Saturday shooting that left a man dead.
James Riden, 39, was killed by a single gunshot wound to his upper chest following an argument between a relative, 26-year-old Markez Jones and 30-year-old Emory Teasley, Winder Police Lt. Dennis Dorsey said.
Teasley and Jones had faced off earlier in the day over an unknown matter, Dorsey said, but shots were fired when the two saw each other later that night in a parking lot outside The Big H Food store at 115 King St.
Emory Teasley is accused of encouraging his brother, 32-year-old Tyrone Teasley, to fire at Jones. Tyrone Teasley shot about four times, Dorsey said. One of those shots struck and killed Riden, while Jones was not hit.
"Emory and Markez had squared off to fight," Dorsey said.
According to a police report, Tyrone and Emory Teasley left the scene in a green Chevrolet Impala driven by another brother, 29-year-old Chris Teasley, following the shooting at 11:10 p.m.
Emory and Chris Teasley came to the Winder Police Department on Saturday night to tell police their version of events. They were arrested and charged with party to the crime of murder. Emory Teasley was put in the Winder jail, while Chris Teasley was taken to the Barrow County Jail, the police report said.
The pair made no statements to investigators, Dorsey said.
Emory Teasley has been in the news before.
He was arrested earlier this year after he allegedly fled from a police officer during a traffic stop. That officer, Greg Maddox, was dismissed following the incident and another involving an unauthorized undercover investigation. As a result, Emory Teasley was not indicted for allegedly fleeing and hitting Maddox.
Police searched for Tyrone Teasley after Saturday's shooting, but did not find him before he turned himself in to police with his attorney around 3 p.m. Monday, Dorsey said.
Police said Tyrone Teasley had not been arrested in the city since 1999, as far back as Winder's electronic records date. Chief Deputy Murray Kogod, spokesman for the Barrow County Sheriff's Office, said Teasley has an arrest record in the county. Kogod would not say how many times Teasley had been jailed or for what.
Tyrone Teasley is charged with murder and two counts of aggravated assault for allegedly shooting at Jones. He did not give a statement to police.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the dispute. Dorsey said The Big H Food store, which shares a parking lot with a new game room, often has people in the area.
"It's an area with a lot of foot traffic, a lot of hanging out," he said. "It's not uncommon to have a lot of people hanging out."
Riden is survived by five children and his mother, Dorsey said. He did not know if Riden was married. Regions Bank has set up a memorial fund for contributions to Riden's family.
