Fugitive wanted in Iowa arrested in Norcross home

NORCROSS - A fugitive wanted in Iowa on robbery charges was arrested Wednesday at a house in Norcross.

Markeye Artez Steele, 28, was taken into custody without a fight after Gwinnett County sheriff's deputies confronted him at a house on Santa Anna Drive in Norcross at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Deputies had received a tip from the Davenport Police Department in Iowa that Steele was residing in Gwinnett, said Stacey Kelley, spokeswoman for the

Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department.

Steele is expected to have an extradition hearing next week. In addition to the robbery charges in Iowa, Steele faces a charge of fugitive from justice, Kelley said.

Man shoots himself in the leg while putting gun away

LAWRENCEVILLE - A 44-year-old Lawrenceville man accidentally shot himself in the leg Tuesday at a house on Rock Springs Road in Lawrenceville.

When police arrived, Michael Kenneth Munn told officers he was attempting to put his gun away when it accidentally discharged. Munn was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Buford Arby's robbed by three gunmen

BUFORD - Three unidentified men robbed the Arby's restaurant Wednesday at 4145 Buford Drive in Buford.

The suspects entered the business at 9:20 a.m. and forced employees to the rear of the building, according to police reports. Two of the robbers were armed with pistols. They taped the hands and mouths of two victims and the mouth of another

victim.

A third suspect stood as a lookout at the front door as his cohorts raided three cash registers and a petty cash box, police reports said. The suspects exited the restaurant leaving the employees tied up.

Elderly man attacked, robbed

NORCROSS - A 77-year-old Norcross man was robbed Wednesday by two men who broke into his Wood Chase apartment on Brookhollow Parkway.

The victim was walking to his apartment about

12:30 p.m. when the suspects approached him and forced him inside the apartment, according to police reports. The robbers hit the elderly man on the head with a rubber mallet and then ransacked his apartment.

The man was treated for a superficial wound at Gwinnett Medical Center.

Woman allegedly plows through fence, pasture

WINDER - A woman allegedly drove through a fence and around a cow pasture before speeding off down the road.

Desiree Merrick, 31, of Winder allegedly drove off the right side of Rockwell Church Road at 4:45 a.m. Monday, striking a mailbox, a stone sign, an Adelphia utility pole and a phone box before driving through a fence. Merrick drove around a cow pasture, according to a police report, before exiting through the hole in the fence.

An officer passed the 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee that Merrick was driving, which appeared to have heavy damage to the driver's side and be covered in fresh dirt or mud, the report said.

Merrick was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, failure to maintain lane and duty to notify owner upon striking fixture, the report said. The property owner reportedly tried to wave Merrick down, and Merrick reportedly had a cell phone on her with which she could have had 911.
