Weekend offers feast of festivals

LAWRENCEVILLE - Don't wait until Memorial Day to head to an outdoor event - there's a whole host of festivities going on this weekend.

Take your pick: You can celebrate the fine arts, rock out at concerts by well-known performers or just enjoy the simple pleasures of a spring festival's atmosphere. Those are some of the highlights in a weekend packed full of community area events.

Rockin' at the Ridge

Suwanee will be rockin' on Saturday with two concerts.

"American Idol" runner-up and Shiloh senior Diana DeGarmo will sing Saturday afternoon at the Rockin' at the Ridge concert at Peachtree Ridge High School. The concert will be held on the football field at the school, 1555 Old Peachtree Road in Suwanee. The concert will raise funds for the Peachtree Ridge High School Foundation.

Gates open at 1 p.m. The music begins at 2 p.m. with a performance by Where's Tallulah, followed by Sam Thacker at 2:30 p.m. Luna Halo will perform at 3:25 p.m. and DeGarmo will sing at 4:25 p.m. Rik Emmett will take the stage at 5:45 p.m. Shawn Mullins, whose set will begin at 7:30 p.m., is the last performer of the evening.

America in concert

Also Saturday, the band America will perform at Suwanee Town Center Park at 7:30 p.m.

The free concert is part of the 2005 Legends Concert Series. The event will begin about 4 p.m. with a remote broadcast by Randy and Spiff of 94.9 Lite. The Mustangs will open for America at 6:30 p.m.

America, which won a Grammy for Best New Artist in 1972, has produced about 20 albums and nearly 200 songs, including its biggest hits: "Horse With No Name," "Ventura Highway," "Tin Man," "Lonely People," "You Can Do Magic" and "Sister Golden Hair."

Patrons may bring lawn chairs, blanket and picnics to the event, but no alcohol is allowed at the park. Food may also be purchased at the event.

Free shuttle service from remote parking lots to Town Center Park will be offered. The parking lots are located at Edeltacom at 300 Satellite Blvd., North Gwinnett High School at 20 Level Creek Road, Shawnee North Business Park at 300 Shawnee North Drive and Systemax at 120 Satellite Blvd.

Flowery Branch Days

Head down to the Depot Park in Flowery Branch on Saturday for a variety of festival activities.

At Flowery Branch Days, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., attractions will include face painting, sand art, a karate demonstration, a woodcarving demonstration, train rides and an array of vendors.

There will also be performances by contemporary Christian band Holy Smokes, contemporary artist Ashley Revrera, and the Bluegrass Band.

Barefoot in the Park

On Saturday and Sunday, the Town Green in Duluth will be filled with fine art for its Barefoot in the Park celebration.

The juried art festival will also include a children's art park, arts workshops, seminars by leading wine experts and performances all day at the Festival Center. At 7:15 p.m. Saturday, Peachtree Symphonic Winds will perform under the direction of Allen Barbee, followed by Peachtree Band of Jazz under the direction of Ray Castleberry.

The artists market will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Wine tastings and seminars will be held in the gazebo from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.
