McCarty, Steinmann to play for SilverbacksCollins Hill graduate Briana McCarty and Providence Christian grad Sarah Steinmann have been added to the roster of the Atlanta Silverbacks' women's team, which will play its inaugural W-League season this year. McCarty is a defender and Steinmann is a forward. McCarty played college soccer at Alabama-Birmingham and Steinmann played for Auburn, where she was the 2002 SEC Player of the Year. McCarty was named the Defensive MVP at last fall's Conference USA Championships.
Former Pope standout Jenny Rynders (of UAB) and former St. Pius star Megan Tuura (Michigan) also made the squad. The Silverbacks' home opener is Saturday at 8 p.m. vs. the Hampton Roads Piranhas. The team plays its home matches at DeKalb Memorial Stadium.
Collins Hill's Tunning to swim at Georgia Tech
Collins Hill senior Greg Tunning, who helped the Eagles to back-to-back state titles in 2004 and 2005, will continue his swimming career at Georgia Tech. He will be honored at a signing party today at 2:30 p.m. in the gym lobby at Collins Hill.
Tunning was the county champion in the 100 butterfly as a senior and was third in the 200 freestyle. At state, he had a fifth-place finish in the 100 fly.
Rau picks Truett-McConnell golf program
Dacula senior Nate Rau, who posted a county-best 29 on nine holes this season, has accepted a golf scholarship to Truett-McConnell College. Rau will be honored in a signing ceremony on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in the Dacula media center.
Northwood to hold seminar on hosting fundraiser golf tournaments
The Country Club of Gwinnett and Northwood Country Club will host a complimentary "Golf Tournaments 101" seminar next Wednesday, May 11, at Northwood. The event begins at 9 a.m. and is followed by lunch and optional golf.
The seminar covers how to market and operate a successful golf tournament fundraiser. It includes pre-event planning, sponsorship procurement, recruiting golfers, use of volunteers, food and beverage coordination, making the event profitable and other topics.
