Students stay home after threat at Duluth High

DULUTH - About 600 students were absent from Duluth High School on Thursday after a bomb threat was written on a bathroom wall.

Tuesday, administrators found a racial slur and mention of a bomb and Thursday's date on a boy's bathroom wall. The threat was removed and a bomb-sniffing dog was used to search the campus Wednesday night, according to Sloan Roach, spokeswoman for the system.

Nothing was found and officials decided to hold classes with added security from local police Roach said. The campus was searched throughout the day and school day ended without incident.

The school's enrollment is 1,942 students, said Roach. About 29 percent of them were absent.

Parents flooded the school with phone calls and questions prompting Principal Pat Blenke to send a letter home with students Thursday.

"As you know, we take any threat against our students, staff and school very seriously," Blenke wrote. "Our investigation into this matter continues."

Funny that I didn't get a letter, and this is the first that I heard of this incident. I'm ticked.

Follow up: I just got off the phone with my daughter, a Duluth High student. She said that she was not informed of a bomb threat, and obviously did not recieve a letter to bring home. Big liars!

This is a very serious issue that some one has been ' swept under the rug'. The local news media at least should have picked up on this immediately. It is like an incident at another school here in Gwinnett where a student had a loaded weapon on campus, and no one heard about that. The school system is letting down their guard and not informing parents of these incidents until after the fact. They have been lucky so far . Also should they call in the local police for security, did they mean the Duluth Police or Gwinnett County Police? Did not see this on the front page or under the 'Top Stories ' on the website. This story was in the commented section.
