LAWRENCEVILLE - A Gwinnett County teenager is in critical condition after getting into a car wreck Monday while driving to see his dying father. Matt Janus, a former South Gwinnett High School football player who graduated in 2004, was driving to Gwinnett Medical Center to see his ill father, Joe Janus, a Gwinnett County police officer, said police spokesman Officer Darren Moloney. Janus wrecked his two-door sedan driving west on Ga. Highway 316 and Cedar Road. His younger sister, who is about 15 years old, was also in the car but was treated for minor injuries and released, Moloney said. Police are still investigating the accident and would not release many details, but Moloney confirmed that the elder Janus died before his son reached the hospital. The officer had been sick for many years and died of natural causes, Moloney said. On Tuesday, Gwinnett County commissioners took a moment to acknowledge the loss in their board meeting. Chairman Charles Bannister asked the public to pray for the Janus family.More like this story
