Gas leak causes evacuation
NORCROSS - Firefighters had to evacuate several houses Wednesday after construction workers struck a gas main and caused a leak at 3635 Medlock Bridge Road in Norcross.
Upon arrival, fire crews found a 4-inch gas main that was leaking. They closed Medlock Bridge Road from South Old Peachtree Road to Peachtree Corners Circle, according to Thomas Rutledge, spokesman for the Gwinnett County Fire Department. Atlanta Gas Light worked to fix the leak while firefighters manned a hose line for protection and monitored gas levels in the area.
Several houses in the area were evacuated until the roadway was reopened at 3:27 p.m., Rutledge said.
Man charged with theft after allegedly taking $50 from man
SNELLVILLE - A Lilburn man was charged with theft after he allegedly deceived a man out of $50 by lying about having a sick child.
A suspect later identified as Michael Allen Buckner, 35, asked a man living on Andrea Lee Court earlier this month if he could borrow money to pay for a prescription for his ailing son. Buckner reportedly claimed he lived in the same neighborhood and said he would pay the man back, but he never did. He also gave the man a fake name, according to police reports.
The victim later identified Buckner in a photo lineup. Buckner has 14 prior convictions for theft by deception using the same method, the officer said.
Woman charged after allegedly cursing, attempting assault on officer
SNELLVILLE - A Snellville woman was arrested last week after she allegedly cursed at and attempted to assault a police officer.
Karen Denise Reaves, 40, was behaving in a violent and demented manner, foaming at the mouth and throwing things when a family member called 911 for assistance, according to police reports. The mother told police Reaves had stopped taking her medication.
According to the report, when officers arrived, Reaves was crying, being very loud and cursing. When asked to be quiet, Reaves waved her finger in front an officer's face and began cursing at him. She refused to sit down, and then swung her fist at the officer and missed, police reports stated. She then allegedly started kicking the officer and scratched his hand.
Police fired a Taser stun gun at Reaves' lower abdomen to subdue her. She was arrested on a charge of felony obstruction.
Man charged after allegedly taking 12-year-old girl
WINDER - A man was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor after a 12-year-old girl disappeared.
Daniel Villagomez, 20, allegedly took the girl to his home in Winder, then to a party in Norcross before returning to his home. He then took her back to her residence, according to a police report.
The girl told an interviewer at the Tree House that she and Villagomez went to a motel off Interstate 85 and had sex, the report said.
The girl was reported missing at 10:37 p.m. July 23 after she took out the trash and didn't return, the report said. Neighbors said they saw her enter a black Ford pickup truck.
Villagomez returned the girl to her home at 5:45 p.m. July 24. He also was charged with interference with custody.
Woman allegedly hits husband with the phone
WINDER - A woman was charged with simple battery and cruelty to children after she allegedly hit her husband over the head with a telephone in front of their children.
Kelly Jackson, 33, of Winder, allegedly got into a fight with her husband when he would not let her use his phone. Jackson's husband said Jackson had broken the house phone the day before, and hit him with a borrowed phone earlier that evening, according to a police report.
The couple's two juvenile children witnessed the incident, the report said.
A warrant was issued for Jackson's arrest following the incident at 11:25 p.m. July 17.
