Bush conferring with senators over nomination
WASHINGTON - Top Senate Democrats floated the names of potential candidates for the Supreme Court on Tuesday in a meeting with President Bush, describing them as the type of nominee who could avoid a fierce confirmation battle.
Several officials familiar with the discussion said Judge Sonia Sotomayor of the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals, Judge Ed Prado of the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, and U.S. District Court Judge Ricardo Hinojosa, all of whom are Hispanic, were among the names mentioned as Bush met with key lawmakers from both parties to discuss the first high court vacancy in 11 years.
Prosecutor: Man to be charged in Idaho murders
COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho - A convicted sex offender, already facing kidnapping charges in the abduction of two Idaho children, will be charged with murder in the slayings of three people found dead at the children's home, a prosecutor said Tuesday.
Joseph Edward Duncan III, 42, is being held in the abduction of Dylan and Shasta Groene, who were declared missing in May after police found the bound and beaten bodies of their mother, her boyfriend and the children's older brother in their home.
Prosecutors seek to return brothers to Aruban jail
ORANJESTAD, Aruba - A judge heard competing appeals Tuesday in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, with a defense lawyer seeking the release of a Dutch teen in the case and prosecutors asking for the re-arrest of two brothers from Suriname.
Brothers Satish and Deepak Kalpoe, and 17-year-old Joran van der Sloot were among the last people to see Holloway, 18, of Mountain Brook, Ala., before she vanished on a high school graduation trip to the island.
The judge was expected to confer with two colleagues before issuing a ruling Thursday.
BTK killer's house sells for $90,000
PARK CITY, Kan. - The owner of an exotic dance club bought the modest home of BTK killer Dennis Rader for $90,000, saying she knows she overbid but wants the proceeds to help Rader's family.
Michelle Borin, well-known in the region through late-night TV commercials for her Michelle's Beach House club, described herself after the auction Monday night as a real estate investor.
She said she had no plans for the home, which had an assessed value of $57,000.
