James W. "Jack" Beachem loved boating and was one of the foremost pioneers in the Atlanta boating community. In his youth he enjoyed racing sailboats and just being out on the water. In 1957, he opened Holiday on Lake Lanier Marina and became involved in the business of boating. In the early years of Holiday, he was a Chris-Craft Dealer, selling boats to fill up the marina. When Holiday was sold in 1983, it had become one of the largest floating marinas in the world. In 1960, Jack started Lazy Days Houseboats and constructed over 450 houseboats before retiring in 1986. Lazy Days houseboats have been sold all over the United States and in Europe. In 1976, he helped his son develop Lazy Days Marina on Lake Lanier. Mr. Beachem became well known and respected in the "Marine Industry." He had many interests including boats, cars, and airplanes. He was a pilot and owned an airplane for many years. After retirement, Jack continued to work as a consultant and entrepreneur. He bought and sold boats and stayed involved in the business. Mr. Beachem loved being on the water cruising in the Keys or on Lake Lanier. In his eighties he tried many new things, including parasailing. Jack Beachem was very proud of his expanding family of five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Beachem, 84, passed away December 27, 2005, after a fall in his home in Flowery Branch. His survivors include his wife, Martha Beachem, Flowery Branch; daughter and son-in-law Susan & Hal Herd, Suwanee; son and daughter-in-law Doug & Laura Beachem, Alpharetta; grandchildren, Shannon & Craig Cole, Duluth; Kelley & Carlos Lugo, Decatur; Erin Herd, Lawrenceville; Jack Beachem & Heather Beachem, Alpharetta. Mr. Beachem was preceded in death by Mrs. Elfie Beachem. Funeral Services for Mr. James W.
