SNELLVILLE - Host South Gwinnett built a 17-point halftime lead and cruised to a 54-32 victory in first round girls basketball action at the Deep South Classic on Tuesday.
Gia Lockett scored 16 points and Emily Clarke had a 15-point night as the Comets advanced to the second round. Alex Winchell added 11 points, including three 3-pointers. Peachtree Ridge was led by Rhea Taylor, who had eight points. GIRLS BASKETBALL GAC 57, Walton 28 SNELLVILLE - Greater Atlanta Christian jumped out to an early 13-2 lead in the opening game of the Deep South Classic and never looked back, blowing out Walton 57-28. The Spartans (11-1) gave up only 10 points in the entire first half, pulling out to a 22-point at the end of the second frame. GAC was led by Sarah Grace Pate with 12 points. Julio Stephens and Kiara Swanier added nine points each. Walton (1-11) was led by Allysa Pforts and Lisa Giuliani with six points. Spartanburg (S.C.) 55, Sequoyah 49 SNELLVILLE - Spartanburg (S.C.) was led by Lele Hardy as it defeated Sequoyah 55-49 in the opening round of the Deep South Classic on Tuesday. Hardy led the Vikings with 19 points and nine rebounds. Sequoyah was led by Chelsea Hix, who had 19 points. BOYS BASKETBALL Bishop McNamara (Md.) 58, Buford 55 SNELLVILLE - Buford scored just four second-quarter points, falling to Bishop McNamara (Md.) 58-55 on Tuesday in the first round of the Deep South Classic at South Gwinnett. Buford came back in the fourth quarter with nine straight points from Terrance Birdette to tie it at 48 but the Mustangs pulled away for good on a pair of free throws with 25 seconds to go. Birdette led the Wolves (7-2) with 17 points, all of which came in the second half. Cam Sherman added 14 points and John Overton scored 10 points. Centennial 65, Stonewall Jackson (Va.) 32 SNELLVILLE - Centennial rolled past Stonewall Jackson (Va.) 65-32 in the first round of the Deep South Classic on Tuesday. Michael Moyniham led Centennial with 11 points. Lorenzo Booker also chipped in with 10 points for the Knights. Martin Reyes led Stonewall Jackson with 10 points. Spartanburg (S.C.) 57, Douglass 55 SNELLVILLE - Danny Jones scored with seven seconds to play as Spartanburg (S.C.) topped Douglass in the first round of the Deep South Classic 57-55 on Tuesday.
