Cafe Aromas

138 Crogan St.,

Lawrenceville 770-995-0225

•Open since: Thanksgiving

•Capacity: The cafe seats about 75 people.

•Location: Cafe Aromas is located on the south side of Lawrenceville's downtown square. It sits next to Cosmo's Original Little Italy Pizza.

•Hours: The cafe is open from 8 a.m. to close, which is usually about 8 or 9 p.m.

•Atmosphere: Cafe Aromas spotlights its specialty, cakes, in the front windows. Inside, the coffee shop has a warm vibe, with rich, earth-toned walls and cozy couches.

Customers can lounge in window seats or on one of several couches. An orange rug and throw pillows tie together the warm decor. Sets of tables and chairs are also available.

The cafe has already developed into a gathering place for kids working on homework and for young couples on dates, said owner Jennifer Brown. Eventually, it might be a gathering place for book clubs or other meetings, she said.

"We wanted it to have a warm and inviting feeling," Brown said. "It's relaxing. You can come in and drink coffee and relax from your busy day."

•The food: The cafe specializes in creating cakes for weddings, birthdays and other special events. But customers can also buy cake and other desserts by the slice, as well as sandwiches and salads.

The sandwich combos, served with a pickle, chips and a cookie, are popular at lunch time. Favorite sandwiches are the turkey with bacon and provolone and the roast beef with cheddar and horseradish sauce, Brown said.

A chicken Caesar salad with romaine lettuce, parmesan cheese, croutons, chicken breast, tricolored pasta and red bell peppers is another popular choice, as well as the Island Bistro salad, which includes romaine lettuce, marinated chicken breast, crumbled blue cheese, mandarin oranges and glazed pecans.

For those looking for breakfast on the run, the cafe offers a few light choices - yogurt layered with granola and fresh fruit or a cheese and fruit tray, featuring gouda, havarti, Swiss and English cheddar.

•Beverages: The cafe serves several different kinds of coffee each day, as well as espressos, cappuccinos, lattes, frozen coffee drinks and smoothies.

•Desserts: All sorts of desserts are showcased in a glass case at the front counter. Some selections include sweet potato cheesecake, white chocolate apricot cheesecake and espresso chocolate cake with mocha icing.

•Things you might not know: Cafe Aromas is actually the second cake shop Brown and her husband, Kenneth, have operated. They previously owned a shop in St. Louis. This time around, the couple decided to expand and offer coffees and food.

The owners have ambitious plans for the future. They'd like to offer open mic or karaoke nights, and maybe even bring in acoustic music acts on weekend nights.
