Gwinnett Daily Post
Today should be quite a treat for local wrestling fans. Four different tournaments will take place today at four different sites, with the Kyle Maynard Duals at Collins Hill highlighting the action.
The defending state champions welcome 11 other teams to the event, which is named after former Collins Hill wrestler and current author/motivational speaker Kyle Maynard. Along with the host Eagles, currently ranked No. 3 in Class AAAAA, there will be a number of top teams from around the Southeast. Oviedo High (Fla.) is currently ranked No. 12 in the nation, Hoover (Ala.) is ranked No. 1 in the state and Dematha (Md.) finished No. 6 in the National Prep Championship last year. Other Georgia teams include: Grayson (10th in AAAAA), Henry County, Cherokee, Eastside, Tucker and Starr's Mill. The tournament starts at 9 a.m. with two pools. The championship match will be around 3:30 p.m. At noon, Maynard will speak and do a short demonstration, and spectators can bring his book "No Excuses" to be autographed. Class AAAAA No. 1 Parkview hosts a dual meet as well today. The Panthers, 17-0 on the season, welcome Ringgold, West Laurens, Byrnes (S.C.), Soddy Daisy (Tenn.) and Grissom (Ala.) for the event, which starts at 9 a.m. North Gwinnett is also hosting a duals event today, as is Dacula. North's tournament, which starts at 10 a.m., features five Gwinnett squads in the eight-team field. Norcross, Duluth, Mill Creek and Central Gwinnett join the Bulldogs in the event, which also has No. 7 Union Grove. Bulldog head coach Steve Hassenger could reach a milestone today as well. If the Bulldogs win all four of their matches, he would pick up his 400th career dual meet victory. Dacula's Falcon Christmas Duals tournament features two other Gwinnett teams - Buford and Brookwood - in the 12-team field. Jefferson, the top-ranked team in Class A, also will be in attendance. The tournament starts at 9 a.m.More like this story
