Wrestling roundup: Parkview wins McCallie Invitational

The Class AAAAA No. 1 Parkview wrestling team traveled up to Tennessee over the weekend and won the McCallie Invitational Wrestling Tournament in Chattanooga.

Carson Fields (103 pounds) and Ron Lofton (135) both went undefeated and took home first-place honors for the Panthers. Jon Puerta (112) finished second, Josh Matlack (145) placed third, Jesse Miller (135), Charles Sandusky (189) and Nandor Csonka (215) all finished fourth for Parkview. Waqas Shafqat (119) and Jake Wallace (152) were fifth and Zac Burger (140) was sixth.

"We wrestled pretty tough this weekend against some very good competition," Parkview coach Dennis Stromie said. "And we did it minus two starters, so we feel pretty good about this weekend."

Parkview scored 207 points to beat second-place Baylor (Tenn.) by 22 1/2 points. Fellow Class AAAAA power McEachern finished fifth, Harrison placed seventh and Walton was ninth in the 23-team tournament.

North wins Hewitt-Trussville Invitational

The North Gwinnett Bulldogs compiled 226.5 points over the weekend to win the Hewitt-Trussville Invitational in Birmingham, Ala.

Host Hewitt-Trussville finished second with 215 points.

Travis Sheehy (135 pounds), Thomas Skowronski (140), Ellis Logeman (145) and Chris West (152) all won their respective weight classes. West was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler after beating three-time Alabama champion Forrest Millsap 9-8 in the finals.

Corey Newman (125), Kyle Chewning (189) and Stephen Buffington (heavyweight) each finished second for the Bulldogs, Robert Crowl (215) was third, Daniel Cole (119) was fourth and Alex Moore (112) placed sixth.

Brookwood places second in own invitational

The Brookwood Broncos finished in second place, behind champion Collins Hill, in Saturday's Brookwood Invitational Wrestling tournament. There were 18 teams that competed in the two-day event, with the Broncos only being bested by the defending state champs.

Brookwood, which is 17-1 in dual meets this season, placed six wrestlers in the 14 weight classes, including two first-place finishes, one second place, two third-place finishes and one fourth-place. The second-place team finish comes on the heels of last week's first-place finish at the Hardaway Invitational in Columbus.

Mill Creek fourth at Brookwood Invitational

Mill Creek's wrestling team took fourth in the Brookwood Invitational this past weekend behind Bobby Lewis, the individual champion at 119 pounds. Lewis also was the 119-pound champ in the Hawks' previous tourney, the Apalachee Wildcat Open.

Teammate Robbie Willingham was second at 112, matching his runner-up finish in the team's two previous tourneys. At the Brookwood Invitational, the Hawks also got a second-place finish from Derek Drobney at 152, a third-place finish from Chris Lee at 145 and a fourth-place finish from Josh Summerour at 160. Lee and Chris Porcheddu won weight class titles earlier this month at the Duluth Wildcat Open.

Grayson finishes fifth at Knightmare Duals

The Grayson wrestling team placed fifth in Saturday's Knightmare Duals at Central Gwinnett High School.

Grayson went 7-1 in the two-day tournament, losing only to Bremen 34-27 in the quarterfinals.

Nathan Swanson (160 pounds) went 8-0 in the event and James Boatright (heavyweight) finished the meet 7-0. Travis Moon (119) finished 7-1 and Mike Kluge (125) lost only once as well, with Moon's lone defeat coming at the hands of last year's state runner-up Daniel Helena of Shiloh.

Peachtree Ridge placed eighth in the tournament.
