GCC Drum to shut down

LAWRENCEVILLE - GCC Drum is shutting down, eliminating 95 jobs, according to the Georgia Department of Labor.

Layoffs at the Lawrenceville facility on Raco Drive are scheduled to begin Jan. 30. The company could not be reached by Wednesday evening.

Formerly known as General Cooperage Co., GCC Drum was founded in 1951. It converted from wooden barrels to fibre drums.

The Gwinnett area has been affected by other recent layoffs. Panasonic Mobile Communications Development Corp. of U.S.A. is closing its Suwanee research and development facility on Northbrook Parkway by the end of March. Some 219 employees will lose their jobs.

In November, General Motors Corp. said it was closing its historic Doraville plant. About 2,900 employees still work at the plant, which will be shut down by 2008.
