Escaped inmate captured in Tennessee

LAWRENCEVILLE - A county inmate who allegedly escaped from work detail and reportedly stole a car was recaptured Tuesday in Tennessee.

Two U.S. Marshals went to a Chattanooga mobile home community around noon - the last known address of escaped inmate Marcus Spangler's wife - in an attempt to track him down. While there, they spotted Spangler walking with another man in the neighborhood, said Deputy Warden Jeff Sligar of the Gwinnett County Department of Corrections.

"He ducked away. They lost sight of him, but surrounded the area they last saw him," Sligar said. "Within a few minutes, they established what trailer he was in and took him into custody."

Spangler, 28, was among a group of inmates assigned to a cleaning crew Friday at the Gwinnett Department of Public Utilities building at 684 Winder Highway. A civilian staff member who was supervising him noticed he was missing shortly before noon.

Authorities think Spangler slipped away, stole a county worker's red Mazda RX-7 that was parked in the Department of Public Utilities parking lot and then drove to Tennessee. He has been charged with felony escape.

Spangler had been at the Gwinnett County Comprehensive Correctional Complex since Oct. 13. He was sentenced in Catoosa County on July 22 to two years and nine months in confinement for credit card fraud.

Authorities are still searching for a 22-year-old Lilburn man who escaped on Dec. 6 from a county work detail at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center.

Deyvi Apolinario was convicted on Oct. 28 in Gwinnett County Superior Court of violating his probation on a charge of possession of tools for the commission of a crime. He was sentenced to serve 12 months in prison followed by 12 months in work release.

There have been no leads on Apolinario's whereabouts since his disappearance, Sligar said.

"That's a very quiet and cold trail right now," Sligar said.

Apolinario is from the Dominican Republic. Investigators believe he might have returned to his homeland. He is described as a black man, 5 feet 11 inches tall and 180 pounds.
