Thirty indicted on charges of selling drugs

ATLANTA - Thirty people accused of being members of a violent north Georgia drug gang have been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of selling cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamine.

U.S. Attorney David E. Nahmias said Monday that all 30 defendants face the three drug charges as part of an 18-month northwest Georgia investigation federal authorities call ''Operation Reclaim.''

Twenty-seven of the defendants also are charged with being part of a racketeering conspiracy.

As of Monday, 27 of the defendants had been arrested on federal charges, Nahmias said.

Authorities said 47 weapons were recovered during one of the arrests.

The five killings involved in the case occurred in northwest Georgia's Floyd and Polk counties.

Two arrested after dog found burned in oven

SAVANNAH - Police have arrested two people after a woman returned home to find her home burglarized and her dog burned to death in the oven.

Angela DeLettre returned home Thursday afternoon to find her back door open, items missing and her kitchen sink overflowing with water.

She was able to find one of her dogs, a 6-year-old Shih Tzu named Pepper. But she was unable to find her other dog, a 1-year-old rat terrier.

Police later found the dog burned to death in the oven, which had been set to 400 degrees.

Alexander Davis, 19 and Evelyn Jeanette Williams, 24, were arrested after police received an anonymous tip.
