Prep Roundup: Mill Creek takes second in softball tourney

HOSCHTON - Mill Creek took second place in the diamond pool of the Hawk/Bulldog Invitational on Saturday, losing the championship game 1-0 to Union Grove.

Mill Creek beat Collins Hill 3-0 in six innings in the first game as Bethany Ullrich shut out the Eagles, allowing just two hits with six strikeouts. Amberlie Saxton went 2-for-2 with a run, while Dez Franklin added two RBIs in the fifth.

The Hawks (10-2) followed with a 5-4 win over Milton. Saxton drove in an RBI with a triple, while Erica Moore added an RBI and two runs.

Katie Hackett earned the win, allowing just one hit and no earned runs in a time shortened five-inning game.

The Hawks fell to Union Grove in six innings in their final game of the afternoon. Ullrich allowed two hits and no earned runs, while striking out six.

Collins Hill beat Union Grove 2-1 in eight innings in the first game of the day. The Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth as Angela Clay drove in a run with a single and would come around to score on a throwing error after a sacrifice bunt by Tamara Perkins.

Collins Hill (6-2-1) came back to beat Milton 4-3 its second game. Ellen Black had an RBI single to put the Eagles up in the third. Collins Hill gave up three runs in the sixth but scored two after Perkins knocked in a run with a single to left. The winning run came around to score after an error by the left-fielder.

SOFTBALL

Central wins silver pool

SUWANEE - Central beat Brookwood 5-2 on Saturday to claim the silver pool title in the Hawk/Bulldog Invitational.

Ashley Razey (1-3) picked up her first win, giving up two earned runs and six hits, and Lacy Reck got the save.

Klair Wells was 2-for-4 with a double and an inside-the-park homer, Aarli Figueroa was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, and Razey was 1-for-2 with two RBIs.

Berkmar takes first in pool

DULUTH - Berkmar won three games Saturday to take the championship in the black pool of the Hawk/Bulldog Invitational on Saturday.

Berkmar shut out Brookstone 6-0 and beat Duluth 6-3 before beating Riverwood 6-3 in the final game.

Cat Tarvin posted all three wins for the Patriots (7-6) while going 5-for-10 at the place with four runs scored. Helping out at the plate was Brittany Boeshore (7-for-9, six runs), Sam Boeshore (6-for-7, three runs) and Erica Joseph (4-for-9,

four runs).

VOLLEYBALL

GAC wins three

SUWANEE - GAC won three of four matches on Saturday and finish third in the Collins Hill Classic.

The Spartans (9-3) beat Berkmar (25-8, 25-21), Lakeside (25-12, 25-14) and Mill Creek (25-22, 25-18) before falling to Etowah (25-27, 22-25)

For the tournament, GAC was led by D'Nay Daniels with 25 kills and 10 aces, Ashley Agin with 24 kills and 26 digs, and Christi Howard with 70 assists and 14 aces.

Wesleyan goes 2-2

ATLANTA - Wesleyan went 2-2 on Saturday at the Marist State Finalist Play Day, beating Sequoyah and Lassiter while losing to Westminster and Marist.

Caiti Troyer had 71 assists, Nicole Fenner had 21 kills and Betsy Smith had 34 kills for Wesleyan, which is 13-3. The Wolves defeated Sequoyah 25-17, 25-17 and beat Lassiter 26-24, 18-25, 25-2. Westminster beat Wesleyan 25-21, 17-25, 25-21 and Marist beat the Wolves 25-20, 26-24.

Mill Creek girls second

at Jaguar Invitational

GRIFFIN - Led by Megan Steinocher, who finished sixth overall with a time of 22 minutes, 6 seconds, the Mill Creek girls cross country team finished second to Union Grove on Saturday in the Jaguar Invitational.

Brittany Grimes was 12th (22:58), Savannah Bryce was 14th (23:19), Brandy Davidson was 16th (23:21) and Lauren Grainger was 24th (24:00) for the Hawks. For four of Mill Creek's top five runners, it was their first cross country meet.

Providence strong at

Jaguar Invitational

GRIFFIN - The Providence girls took second place in its class in the Jaguar Invitational on Saturday.

Kara Kruetzer led the Stars with a third-place finish at 21 minutes, 36 seconds. Mary Katherine Franklin came in ninth (22:33) and Jordan Kelly was 19th (23:43).

In the boys race, Providence came in third overall. The team was led by Justin Dunnahoo, who came in 21st place with a time of 19:19.
