Buford apartment damaged in fire

BUFORD - A kitchen fire broke out Monday afternoon at Windridge Apartments at 2001 Windridge Drive, causing fire damage to one unit and smoke damage to two others.

Firefighters who were called out at 3:22 p.m. arrived to find smoke showing from one unit of an eight-unit building. Food had been left unattended on the stove, said Thomas Rutledge, spokesman for the Gwinnett County Fire Department.

"The family that was there left to pick up someone, and when they returned they had a fire in the kitchen," Rutledge said.

No one was injured in the blaze. Heavy fire damage was sustained to the kitchen of the apartment, and there was also smoke damage to two adjacent units.

Woman injured in drive-by shooting

NORCROSS - A 20-year-old Norcross woman was shot in the leg Friday in a drive-by shooting on Downs Lane.

The woman was in her bedroom about 10 p.m. when she heard gunshots, felt a pain in her leg and fell to the floor, according to police reports. She was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center for treatment.

Investigators found four bullet holes in the home, and another bullet shattered the passenger window of a vehicle parked in the driveway.

A witness who was outside the house said the shooters were riding in a dark-colored Nissan pickup truck.

Communications store robbed

DULUTH - Two unidentified men on Thursday robbed the Future Communications Store on 3365 Steve Reynolds Blvd.

The men entered the store about 7 p.m. wearing masks and carrying handguns, according to police reports. They locked an employee in a bathroom and then pilfered the register. The robbers also took a digital camera and cell phones from several of the displays.

A witness told police the suspects left in a maroon Chrysler and wrote down the tag number. The robbery is under investigation.

Lithonia man carjacked

STONE MOUNTAIN - A Lithonia man was carjacked Thursday while going to Wachovia Bank at 1850 Rockbridge Road to make a deposit, police reports stated.

The victim, a McDonald's restaurant manager, was getting out of his car at 10:30 a.m. when an unidentified black man came up to the door and brandished a gun. The suspect ordered the manager to get out, stole his wallet and the bank deposit and then fled in the man's 1998 Honda Accord.
