Shanteau wins gold with meet record at World University Games

· Parkview graduate Eric Shanteau set a meet record on Sunday at the World University Games in Izmir, Turkey, winning the gold medal in the 200-meter individual medley.

Shanteau, a senior at Auburn, led throughout the race and finished nearly a second ahead of runner-up Vytautas Janusaitis of Lithuania. His winning time was 2 minutes, 0.13 seconds.

"My race felt more relaxed than what I would have wanted," said Shanteau, who swims his other event, the 400 IM, today. "But I came in with the goal of winning this gold, so that feels good. Having to watch it two years ago (as a member of the 2003 U.S. team) from the stands wasn't fun. I love the 200 IM. The event has really started to come around for me in the past year and a half."

Brookwood grad and Northwestern swimmer Andrea Hupman also won gold at the meet as a member of the U.S. 400 freestyle relay team. Hupman swam a lead leg of 56.26 to put the Americans out front for good.
