Smyth among three signed by Thrashers

ATLANTA - The Atlanta Thrashers signed former Gwinnett Gladiators forward Adam Smyth, the team announced Tuesday.

Also inking deals were defenseman Shane Hnidy and forward Brian Maloney.

Smyth, on contract with Chicago of the American Hockey League last year, spent the majority of his rookie season in Gwinnett. A fan favorite for his frequent fisticuffs, Smyth notched 16 points and a team-high 217 penalty minutes in 49 games with the Gladiators. The 6-foot-1, 215-pound Ontario native played three games with Chicago last year.

Hnidy, who was acquired by Atlanta from Nashville for a fourth-round selection in the 2006 draft, registered 22 points and 353 penalty minutes in 198 NHL games with Ottawa and Nashville. The defenseman played 19 games for the Florida Everblades and helped the team advance to the ECHL's Kelly Cup finals last season.

Maloney, 26, notched 17 points and ranked fourth on the club with 164 penalty minutes in a career-high 77 games with Chicago in 2004-05.
