Prep Roundup: Wesleyan boys shock Model 1-0

ROME - Wesleyan's boys advanced to the second round of the Class AA/A state soccer playoffs with a 1-0 upset of sixth-ranked Model on Friday night.

Wesleyan, the No. 4 seed out of Area 8-AA/A, improved to 4-14 and will face the winner of the Athens Academy-Paideia match Wednesday.

The game was scoreless until two minutes left to play when Cody Scott headed in the winning goal off Travis Smith's corner kick. Goalkeeper Collin DeNoya had several nice saves to help blank Model, the top seed from Area 6-AA/A.

BASEBALL

Centennial 6, Collins Hill 5

SUWANEE - Michael Klindt hit a three-run homer with two outs and a 3-2 count, lifting Centennial to a 6-5 comeback win over host Collins Hill on Friday night. It was the first Region 7-AAAAA loss of the season for the Eagles.

Collins Hill (16-7, 6-1) led 5-2 heading into the seventh before Centennial rallied. Ryan Tabor started the game for the Eagles and was relieved by Tyler Oliver in the seventh.

North 7, Mill Creek 2

HOSCHTON - North Gwinnett picked up a Region 7-AAAAA win Friday night by beating Mill Creek 7-2. Mike Peters (4-2) went the distance for North, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk with three strikeouts.

Peters also went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI while Justin Rahm went 2-for-4. North (10-12, 5-3) also received a solid offensive game from Matthew Hale, who was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, including a solo home run.

Central 15, Meadowcreek 0

LAWRENCEVILLE - Zach Carico was 3-for-3 with five RBIs Friday night as Central Gwinnett routed Meadowcreek 15-0 in three innings.

Kevin Greene added two hits with an RBI and three runs while Trip Pognant finished 2-for-2 with an RBI. Chase Sturm (2-1) notched the win with two hits allowed over three innings. Central improved to 8-14 overall and 3-7 in Region 8-AAAAA.

South 11, Berkmar 6

LILBURN - David Hobson went 3-for-3 with a two-run homer, leading South Gwinnett past Berkmar 11-6 on Friday night in Region 8-AAAAA play.

Rob Flanigan drove in three runs with a 1-for-4 night, while Neil Rollins finished 2-for-3 with two runs for the Comets (11-11, 7-4). Brent Portz added a 2-for-2 performance with a run while Jackson Dean finished 2-for-5. The winning pitcher was Cory King, who went seven innings to improve to 2-3.

Berkmar (11-12, 5-6) was led by a 3-for-4 night and a run scored from Michael McCree. Joe Hendricks took the loss on the mound for the Patriots.

Brookwood 8, Shiloh 2

SNELLVILLE - Clayton Cain and Wes Adkins hit back-to-back home runs twice on Friday night, leading Brookwood to an 8-2 win over Shiloh in Region 8-AAAAA play. Cain finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Adkins was 3-for-4 with three runs driven in.

Anders Oster added an RBI on one hit for Brookwood (12-8, 7-3), while Ryan Bode (4-2) pitched six innings, allowing six hits and four walks with four strikeouts.

Killian Hill splits

GCAA semis

LILBURN - Killian Hill faced Open Bible Baptist on Friday in the semifinals of the Georgia Christian Athletic Association state playoffs and split a doubleheader to force a deciding Game 3 today at noon at Killian Hill.

Open Bible opened the series with a 4-2 win over the Cougars. Allan Bailey took the loss for Killian Hill, despite pitching seven innings with seven hits, two walks, three earned runs and eight strikeouts. Brad Whayne was 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs while Chris Niarchos was 2-for-3 with a double.

Killian Hill evened the series with a 6-3 win in Game 2. Aaron Parks pitched five innings in relief of Whayne for the win. He allowed seven hits, two runs and two walks. Drew Steckenrider was 1-for-2 with a solo homer while Daniel Strassberger was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

TENNIS

GAC boys and girls advance to second round

NORCROSS - Both Greater Atlanta Christian tennis teams advanced to the second round of the Class AA state playoffs on Friday.

GAC's boys (16-4) swept Pepperell 3-0 in the first round while the girls (17-4) were 3-0 winners over Pepperell. The boys will host Walker in second round action while the girls' second round opponent has yet to be determined.

Brookwood 5, Milton 0

STONE MOUNTAIN - The Brookwood girls opened the Class AAAAA state tournament with a 5-0 blanking of Milton on Thursday at Lincoln Tennis Center. The Broncos (19-0) got singles wins from Dana Guentert, Courtney McLane and Jenna Wright.

Doubles victories came from Paige Ivey and Maddy Brown at No. 1 and from Rebecca Palmer and Lindsey Peyton at No. 2.
