Gilbert leads GAC boys to 8-AA golf title

DAWSONVILLE - The Greater Atlanta Christian boys golf team won the Region 8-AA title on Thursday, shooting a team score of 309 at Gold Creek Golf Club. Chris Gilbert led the Spartans with a 73, tying for second place individually.

Pavle Potparic added a 76 for GAC while David Thompson shot 79 and Blake Joiner shot an 81. The Spartans will be joined at state by Banks County, which was second with a score of 319.

Providence's John Oliver tied for second place with a 73, while Wesleyan, which placed fourth at 325, was led by Tyler Rardin's 74.


GAC second in 8-AA,

earns state berth

DAWSONVILLE - Led by Katie Tufts' 87, the Greater Atlanta Christian girls earned a state berth by placing second at Thursday's Region 8-AA tournament, held at Gold Creek Golf Club.

Tufts placed second individually and her teammate, Rebekah Osteen, was third with a 90. The Spartans had a team score of 177 to place behind region champ Dawson County. Dawson County shot 172, led by Courtney Miller, who was low medalist with a 75.


Buford 5,

Dawson County 1

BUFORD - R.M. Cozza pitched a complete game for Buford, leading the Wolves to a 5-1 Region 8-AA win over visiting Dawson County on Thursday.

Cozza (5-2) pitched six scoreless innings before allowing his only run of the game in the seventh. The game ended in unique fashion, with Buford getting out of the seventh thanks to a triple


The Wolves (17-3, 12-2) were led by Cory Allen, who was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Chase Burnette was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Jon Macolino was 1-for-2 with a pair of RBIs.

Dacula 11, North 3

DACULA - Shannon Wilkerson was 4-for-4 and Jeremie Tice was 3-for-3 with five RBIs as Dacula pounded out 17 hits in an 11-3 defeat of North Gwinnett on Thursday night in Region 7-AAAAA play.

Tice also hit a homer for Dacula (10-11, 2-5) while Tony Baker and Josh Colsson were both 3-for-5. Also hitting well for the Falcons were Bryant Jones (2-for-4) and Tait Poitevint (2-for-5, two RBIs).

Providence 12,

Union Co. 0

LILBURN - Braden Langley and Chris Waites hit home runs as Providence beat Union County 12-0 in five innings on Thursday. The Region 8-AA win boosts the Stars to 18-5 overall and 12-4 in region play.

Clayton Thompson picked up the win, pitching four innings, while Waites, Langley and Collin McHugh were all 2-for-2. McHugh also had two RBIs.

Wesleyan 4, GAC 0

NORCROSS - Tony Plagman hit a two-run homer and also picked up the win on the mound as Wesleyan defeated host Greater Atlanta Christian 4-0 in Region 8-AA play on Thursday.

Plagman pitched six innings, striking out six and allowing only two hits. He was also 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBIs for the Wolves, who improve to 13-5 overall and 12-3 in region play.

Killian Christian 13,

Colonial Hills 2

LILBURN - Killian Hill Christian defeated Colonial Hills Christian 13-2 in five innings in the first round of the Georgia Christian Athletic Association playoffs on Thursday.

Daniel Strassberger was 3-for-4 with a double and five RBIs and Allan Bailey was 3-for-3 with three doubles for the Cougars (11-1). Andrew Fulbright was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Drew Steckenrider (3-0) pitched a complete game.


Grayson 3, Pope 2

LOGANVILLE - Grayson swept singles play in Thursday's match with Pope, posting a 3-2 win in the first round of the Class AAAAA state


The Rams improved to 14-2 behind wins from Alex Haney, Sonia Anand and Sarah Beth Britt.

Calhoun 3, Buford 2

CALHOUN - Calhoun beat visiting Buford in the first round of the Class AA state tournament. Buford's points came in doubles, with the No. 1 team of Brittany Peevy and Allison Valdez winning along with the No. 2 team of Jessica Waycaster and Lauren Henderson.


Harrison 10, Wesleyan 6

KENNESAW - Harrison defeated visiting Wesleyan 10-6 on Thursday. Alison Edwards scored three goals to lead the Wolves (9-5), who received one goal each from Andrea Presscott, Mandy Fleming and Missy Genthert.
