Student Dies After Collapsing

LAWRENCEVILLE - A high school freshman died Monday after collapsing after school at football conditioning.

The 15-year-old student, whose name was not released because of medical protection laws, was training outdoors for football at Central Gwinnett High School when he complained to coaches he was not feeling well, according to Maj. Paul King, spokesman for the Lawrenceville Police Department. The coaches told him he could sit out the remainder of the drills.

Around 3 p.m., the students went inside to do weight room training, King said. The freshman told coaches he was feeling better and got in line for the bench press, King said.

While waiting in line, the student collapsed. Staff rushed to help him and called 911, King said.

Rescue officials responded to the emergency call, but the student was pronounced dead by shortly after he arrived at Gwinnett Medical Center.

Police are investigating the incident and will not know the cause of death until an autopsy is completed, King said.

Gwinnett County Public Schools spokeswoman Sloan Roach said the system will work with police during the investigation.

Central Gwinnett athletic director Mark Kimbro had no comment about the incident at press time.
