DULUTH — A 58-year-old Duluth man died Saturday after he ran a red light and hit two other vehicles, a Gwinnett County Police Department spokesman said Monday.

The incident happened about 8:55 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of Sugarloaf Parkway and Old Peachtree Road in Duluth, Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Edwin Ritter said.

The preliminary investigation revealed Michael H. Colson, who was driving a silver 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee, was northbound on Old Peachtree Road when he ran a red light and entered the intersection of Sugarloaf Parkway, Ritter said.

As the Jeep entered the intersection, it struck a Toyota Highlander, driven by 47-year-old Stacy H. Starkey of Roswell, Ritter said.

The Jeep continued northbound and struck a third vehicle, a Lexus RX350, driven by Lawrenceville resident Mumtax A. Virani, 49. The Jeep and the Lexus both overturned from the force of the collision, Ritter said.

Colson was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the Jeep during the collision, Ritter said. He died on the scene as a result of injuries he sustained.

Virani, who was wearing a seat belt, was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center for treatment for injuries that were not life-threatening.

There are no indications that alcohol was involved in the accident.
