SUWANEE — More than 100 people gathered in Gwinnett this week to talk about the future of public education in Georgia.
Teachers, school administrators, parents, students and business leaders shared their ideas on what classrooms will look like in 2015.
The community conversations were part of “A Vision for Public Education in Georgia,” an initiative of the Georgia School Boards Association and the Georgia School Superintendents Association. The conversations were scheduled throughout the state to allow community members to learn about the initiative and give them an opportunity to provide input.
The visioning plan, to be completed by November, focuses on seven areas: teaching, learning and assessment; supports for early learning and student success; human and organizational capital; governance, leadership and accountability; climate, culture and organizational efficacy; financial resources and physical resources, education consultant Bill Barr said.
“(The community conversations) provide an opportunity for the planning team to hear what people around the state expect from public education,” Barr said. “We’ve got to move the things that you folks say into the document. The community, generally speaking, needs to become more engaged with the public school system that serves that community.”
