BUFORD — By action of the Buford City Commission on Monday night with one member abstaining, construction of a single-family home with reduced permanent buffers will be allowed on a 1.5-acre parcel next to a retirement village on old Hamilton Mill Road.

Guerry Garrett appeared on behalf of the applicant, GH&J Properties, which plans to build a 4,000-square-foot brick home adjacent to Heritage North, a retirement community. Conditions for construction were amended from a Sept. 13, 1993, commission meeting reduced the original 25-foot buffer.

Attorney Tony Powell, representing Heritage North resident Tim Robinson, said the buffers needed to stay in place because of the high density of construction there.
“This is not a great place for a residence,” he said. “What it is is a good place for a retirement home. Let it remain green space.”

Jack Wallace, another resident, said, “Our concern if a residence is built there that it fits in with the Heritage North retirement center.”
In other business, the commission:

• Agreed to allow Marty Orr to open a car wash on Ga. Highway 20.

• Allowed annexation requests from Kenneth and Vicky Pendley (2027 Buford Dam Road); Beth B. Lancaster (1935 Buford Dam Road, two properties); and Beulah Lancaster (1945 Buford Dam Road). Annexations also were approved for one property on Buford Highway, and two on Friendship Road.

• Adopted an agreement and ordinance for promotion of tourism, conventions, and trade shows with the Gwinnett Convention and Visitors Bureau.

• Authorized the city manager to sign a consent agreement with the Public Service Commission for several cases.
