Dan Furst watches the video monitor bank as actors rehearse a scene for the film “For Colored Girls” being filmed at Gwinnett Medical Center’s Joan Glancy Memorial Clinic in Duluth on Thursday. The movie, based on the play “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf” by Ntozake Shange, will star Whoopi Goldberg, Janet Jackson and Phylicia Rashad. |
DULUTH — A make-up artist applies a thick, red-colored liquid along the side of actress Kimberly Elise’s neck and to the front of her shirt.
On film, that liquid will appear to be blood.
The actress then picks up a young boy and girl splattered with that same liquid, each in one arm, and starts to get into character — her cries of panic and fear filling a corridor at the Joan Glancy Memorial Clinic in Duluth even before a crew member yells, “action.”
The scene is an emotional one as Elise, flanked by fellow actresses Janet Jackson and Phylicia Rashad, carries her injured, limp children into an emergency room. The ER staff takes over, and Jackson and Rashad attempt to calm the hysterical Elise before the camera shifts focus to Whoopi Goldberg, her hair covered by a white wrap, as she talks with the medical staff.
The final cut will be part of director and producer Tyler Perry’s film adaptation of the 1970s play “For Colored Women Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf.”
The scenes shot Thursday were filmed at the Joan Glancy Memorial Clinic in the emergency room section of the former hospital, an area no longer in use.
Thursday was the second and, according to producer Joe Genier, what was expected to be the final day of shooting at the Duluth medical facility, which now operates as a Diabetes and Nutrition Education Center, in- and out-patient physical rehabilitation facility and sleep center.
“We’ve had such a good shoot here that we’re going to accomplish all the scenes that we need to do at the hospital setting in our script and shoot them all today,” he said.
Genier noted several scenes from the movie take place in a hospital or medical facility setting.
“We had a lot of hospital needs in the script, a lot of the drama in the story and trauma as well happens obviously in a hospital setting,” he said. “This hospital gave a great feel and also had different looks.”
The film is the third shot on a Gwinnett Medical Center property in the past year. The first, “Due Date” starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Foxx, was shot in the fall. The second, “Hall Pass” starring Owen Wilson and Jenna Fischer, was filmed in March.
Oprah Winfrey was reportedly on the set of “For Colored Girls” on Wednesday night visiting with Perry after speaking at an event in Atlanta.

as far as publicity for Duluth, I would figure it had it's fair share during the whole Runaway Bride episode....as far as this film goes, it sounds like a winner! always cool to see real local places on the big screen
This in responce to G$. That is not true about Duluth Rehab. It is a wonder place they got me walking again after I had brain surgery because I had a brain tumor the staff is wonderful I am so thankful to everyone that that helped me while I was there the poor nurses that had to help me when I could barely stand up. That is a very hard job taking care of patients that can't walk or talk. You try doing that just one day. I am sorry for anyone who had a bad experience there. I personally would recommened Joan Glancy Rehab. to anyone who needs help. They are wonderful.
