NORCROSS — The first Democrat has entered the fray for John Linder’s coveted congressional seat.

Doug Heckman, a Green Beret and Army colonel, announced he would run for the District 7 seat for the second time. In 2008, he received 41 percent of the vote in the general election.

Heckman recently returned from his second deployment to Iran, where he received his third combat Bronze Star.

“The message of my campaign is ‘Service Before Self’ because my decision to run is an extension of my military service,” he said. “Public servants should have the same integrity and commitment to problem solving that is required of the defenders of our nation. Self-interested and career politicians have forgotten that they were elected to bring people together and help turn good ideas into reality.”

A West Point graduate whose two sons will enter the military institution this year, Heckman said the public needs more combat veterans in government.

“We are used to accountability and effective communication which have been sorely lacking in our congressional district,” he said.

Since Linder announced his retirement more than a month ago, the ballot has become crowded, although Heckman is the first Democrat to announce a run.

Seven Republicans will compete in a July primary, including Rep. Clay Cox, former Linder Chief of Staff Rob Woodall, Walton businessman Tom Kirby, Walton minister Jody Hice, Duluth resident James “Jef” Fincher, Peachtree Corners businessman Tom Parrott and Snellville accountant Bill Malone.

@Bill: I've known this candidate for over 20 years and only wish I lived in his district so I could vote for him. His sense of integrity and compassion for public service is second to none. I think most intelligent people understand that a label (in this case, democrat), doesn't define an entire person anymore than any other stereotype you can think of. Read his positions, look at his history of behavior, I'm impressed.

@Bill: Please don't demean soldiers and our military by characterizing them as those who just take orders. This guy had the courage to put his life on the line for his country. He was stationed in a zone called the most vulnerable place for an American to be in the middle east. He wasn't there for money or pride or politics or to represent the left or the right or the up or the down. If you don't want to vote for a soldier, at least have the decency not to insult our brothers in arms.

Democrats are just stuck on stupid. They can't get anything done. Look at their abysmal performance since they were installed in 2007. I'm sorry, but if this is a war hero, the simple fact is, he just turned in his conservative credentials when he signed up with far lefties like Dennis Kucinich, Wiccan Left Coaster Nancy Pelosi and far left/brain damaged Harry Reid. There is no doubt that this guy is good at taking orders which means that he will take orders from radical Communists who seek to have America wave the white flag of surrender to the jihadists. This guy will make us far left safe by agreeing with liberals and the Barack Hussein Obama administration. I think you will see him get about 23 percent of the vote this year. If you're looking for a great candidate, then look no further than Clay Cox who will be a fine leader for GA's 7th. Clay is committed to low taxes, faith-based initiatives, family values, the right to bear arms, the expansion of Gitmo and and job! Amen
