ESTERO, Fla. — After two tough losses against the Everblades on their current trip, the Gwinnett Gladiators changed their luck on Saturday in Florida.
The Gladiators trailed by two goals early, but scored three unanswered goals to take a 3-2 lead into the first intermission. The Everblades tied the game just 47 seconds into the third period, but Matt Francis struck on the power play to give Gwinnett the 4-3 victory.
Down 2-0, Gwinnett cut Florida’s lead in half on the power play as Tim Miller and Mike McLean worked some nice passes before Miller found Matt Francis in the slot for the one-timer goal.
The Gladiators struck for a second man-advantage goal when Tom Zanoski tipped home a pass from Adam Berti. Moments later, Drew Paris made a great play to hold the puck in the zone and ripped a slap shot towards the net. Dan Sullivan provided a screen and tipped the blast from Paris through the five hole to give the Gladiators a 3-2 lead.
The Everblades evened the score just 47 seconds into the third period. Brandon Buck brought the puck along the right side in the Gwinnett defensive end. Buck fired a pass into the slot, and Ross Carlson connected on a shot inside the left post.
Neither team scored in the second period, as the Gladiators were not able to make use of three power plays in the period.
The Gladiators grabbed the lead back at the 5:32 mark of the third, once again on the power play. Paris worked the puck in to Scott Mifsud on the right wing boards. Mifsud quickly fired a pass to Matt Francis, and Francis blasted a shot into the back of the net.
The Gladiators improved to 27-26-4-2 and Florida fell to 32-20-4-5. Gwinnett finished 3-for-9 on the power play while the Everblades connected on 1 of 4 chances.
