OUR VIEW: Gang bust a reminder of real danger

Last Updated: 7:19 PM 03/06/10 - The news this week that the gang Mara Salvatrucha — or MS-13 — has been effectively put out of commission in metro Atlanta by a federal indictment that ties 26 members to murders, robberies and other crimes is a reminder of the underbelly that exists in Gwinnett County. Last Updated: 7:45 PM 02/13/10 - During his State of the County address this week, Chairman Charles Bannister said he was taking a “deliberately positive” tone. That’s understandable after a rough 2009 that saw the county go through tough economic times, budget cuts and public uproar over tax proposals. It was such a rough year that Bannister gave a second address in September to talk about those issues. (Full Story)

OUR VIEW: Ga. House should pass texting ban
Last Updated: 7:58 PM 01/22/10 - Anyone who has driven in Gwinnett and metro Atlanta traffic will agree that it’s tough enough to navigate without typing at the same time. But texting while driving has become a common (and dangerous) practice, one that would be curbed if the General Assembly passes legislation making it illegal. (Full Story)

Last Updated: 1:02 PM 12/10/09 - It took until the first day of the 12th month for the Board of Commissioners to finally decide on a tax rate for 2009. To put in perspective how long the process took, consider that the 2.28 mill increase the commissioners voted on this past Tuesday won’t be billed to homeowners until March of 2010. (Full Story)
